UHV freshman focuses on photography, video club

It was a digital camera from an uncle that led University of Houston-Victoria freshman Ramiro Chapa to his latest hobby.
“I began taking pictures and shooting video clips,” the Rosenberg native said. “In high school, I learned about video editing, and I was hooked. Now, I’m OK at it.”
Today, he’s morphed that passion into Eye of the Jaguar, an on-campus photography and video club that he started this semester.
“I basically started asking people if they were interested,” the club founder explained. “Once I got a couple of people on board, we were able to get more. Now we have about eight members.”
The organization’s main purpose is to cover events for UHV. The group already has covered the Jaguar Hall Costume Party and the Meet the UHV Student Senate event, he said, and has other events lined up to film.
“As we grow and get more people, I hope we’ll be able to host workshops where we can work on our techniques and learn from each other,” he said. “My goal is to make Eye of the Jaguar a self-sustaining group that will keep on going after I’m gone.”
Eye of the Jaguar might still be in its infancy, but the project is exciting, said Chapa, a self-proclaimed perfectionist when it comes to his work.
Photography and video projects aren’t the only things he is interested in. He busies himself with video games when he isn’t in class or studying. He also enjoys keeping up with the news.
Chapa, a 2010 graduate of Foster High School in Richmond, said he’s still adjusting to dorm and college life. The biggest challenge thus far has been the workload. Although he typically finished his high school work during class and didn’t have to study much afterward, he said college is a different story.
In the meantime, he’s still feeling out his future. He hasn’t yet decided on a degree program or career path, but said there is still time to decide.
“I just haven’t found my purpose in life yet,” he said.
