The University of Houston-Victoria School of Education, Health Professions & Human Development is now offering a graduate-level dyslexia certificate, and an April 17 information session will give the public an opportunity to learn more about it.
“The learning needs of students with dyslexia are different than students without it, and it’s important to understand what those needs are,” said Carol Klages, a UHV associate professor of Education and a dyslexia specialist. “When we have a clear understanding, we as educators can better serve them in their studies and help make a difference in their lives.”
A dyslexia certificate information session will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday in UHV University West, Room 216. The event is free and open to the public.
The dyslexia certificate is for educators who want to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of students with dyslexia and motivate individuals who work with these students. The certificate was offered starting January. Students may be admitted and begin studies starting in the spring, summer or fall semesters, and must have an education related bachelor’s degree. The program is offered completely online or through school district cohorts in other areas. Students in the program will take three online courses focused on International Dyslexia Association Standards. Upon completion of the courses, students will receive a certificate from UHV and can take the Center for Excellence in Reading Instruction exam to become a nationally certified Structured Literacy Teacher.
In conjunction with completing the UHV certificate, students will have the option to enroll in additional classes required to fulfill a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in literacy studies.
