UHV students and faculty pose for a photo Saturday during the Fall 2019 Undergraduate Research Symposium at the University of Texas at Austin, where three students presented cutting-edge research in biology. Standing from left are Gen Kaneko, a UHV assistant professor of biology; Dmitri Sobolev, a UHV associate professor of biology; Noemi Bustamante, a Richmond junior; Terry Harryman, a Victoria senior; Crystal Salinas, a UHV alumna from Brownsville; Hashimul Ehsan, a UHV assistant professor of biology; and Katie Timmins, a Victoria senior. Timmins, Bustamante and Harryman each presented research on topics that included identification of a slime mold species, detecting genes activated through calorie restriction, and testing for fertilizer runoff contamination in the Guadalupe River. In addition, Ehsan served as a moderator for a session of presentations, and Salinas served as a session judge.
