UHV media day planned
The University of Houston-Victoria sports fans will have an opportunity to mingle with their favorite Jaguar players during the first UHV Spring Sports Media Day set for Saturday, Jan. 22 at Riverside Stadium.
UHV athletes participating in baseball, softball and golf will be on hand to talk with and sign autographs for fans and visit with local and area media from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The day is also a golden opportunity for baseball fans to pick their seats for the upcoming baseball season which swings into action Jan. 28 with a home doubleheader against Northwood University at 3 p.m.
Fans will have a chance to view the Riverside Stadium seating from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and purchase season tickets for the upcoming season. Season tickets are $100 for reserved seating and $75 for general admission for 30 home games.
“This is a great opportunity for baseball fans to select their seats for the upcoming season and be a supporter of UHV athletics,” said UHV Athletics Director Ashley Walyuchow. “We have a competitive schedule and a number of special events planned for this year, so it’s an ideal time to purchase your tickets and meet the teams.”
The Jaguars open the season with a four-game series against Northwood on Jan. 28-29, and Saturday’s festivities will include a tailgate party. The Jaguars will also entertain Texas A&M-Kingsville, St. Mary’s University, the University of the Incarnate Word, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this season.
Other home series include Fisher College, Texas Wesleyan, Sterling College, UT-Brownsville, East Texas Baptist, and LSU-Alexandria.
“This could easily be one of the best teams we have ever fielded,” Walyuchow said. “And the schedule is ideal to help us make a run at another conference championship and a berth into the NAIA national championships.”
The softball team will also be looking for a trip to the NAIA national tournament after missing out last season.
“Coach (Keri) Lambert has done another fine job of recruiting and we’re looking for a highly successful season on the softball field,” Walyuchow said.
The Jaguars begin the 2011 softball season on Feb. 4-5 in the Galveston Island Tournament, before hosting Texas Southern in their home opener on Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. Softball fans can also purchase their season tickets at Saturday’s event.
Other home series for the Jaguars include games with Huston-Tillotson, Our Lady of the Lake, Texas College, Central Baptist College, LSU-Alexandria, Houston Baptist and Prairie View A&M. The Jaguars will also host Texas Wesleyan and Texas Southern in the UHV Invitational in April.
The UHV golf team also begins its first spring season with the women opening tournament play on Feb. 12-14 at the Texas State Claud Jacobs Challenge at Victoria Country Club. The Jaguars men’s team opens the season Feb. 19-21 at UT-Brownsville.
