Corpus native focuses on studies, Jaguar golf

Morgan DeSive can tell you a lot about her childhood – the name of her first-grade teacher, her favorite toy and even the friends she hung out with. What might not come so easily is remembering the first time she picked up a golf club.
The University of Houston-Victoria junior has been around the sport ever since she can remember.
“My dad is a pro at the Corpus Christi Country Club, and he started me in golf,” she said. “But I’ve always liked it. I grew up around it.”
The 20-year-old played on teams through high school and went on to play for McLennan Community College in Waco. This year, she became part of UHV’s first-ever women’s golf team.
“We practice Monday through Friday, probably three to three-and-a-half hours each day,” she said. “We’ll practice more, once the weather’s better. It’s a lot of work, but it’s good.”
DeSive’s decision to move to Victoria came for a couple of reasons. A student can only play golf for two years at a community college, and UHV was closer to her family in Corpus Christi.
So far, so good.
“It’s gone well,” she said. “UHV is smaller than my previous college, and I enjoy it.”
DeSive also enjoys her teammates. They get along well and spend time together away from the course. She and teammate Lyndie Smith even room together in a Victoria apartment.
It isn’t all about golf, however.
Her schedule doesn’t leave room for many extracurricular activities, but she makes it home to visit family when she can.
The business major, who has always enjoyed learning, focuses on schoolwork and maintains good grades. Although she isn’t quite sure what the future holds, she is considering applying to dental school after graduation.
Her advice to other students working to balance academic life with hobbies? Plan ahead.
“Stay on top of everything and don’t wait until the last minute,” she said. “If you get everything done on time, it’s really not that hard.”
