UHV students to share short films at free screening
Ten University of Houston-Victoria students spent their spring semester interviewing, shooting and editing short films. And now, they are ready to share their finished productions with the public.
UHV will be hosting a free screening at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Alcorn Auditorium of UHV University West, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St.
“Most of them had never shot video, and none of them had ever edited,” said Macarena Hernández, who taught the documentary filmmaking class. “This project gave students an opportunity to learn firsthand what it takes to produce a documentary.”
The screening will feature four short films. “A Portrait of a Simple Man” features local country singer Jarrod Birmingham. “Walking Hard,” produced by two UHV baseball players, takes a look at the very young team. “L.A.R.P” explores the world of live-action role playing, and “Paranormal Crossroads” looks into the Victoria Investigative Paranormal Research, a team of locals who perform scientific inquiries to confirm or deny the existence of paranormal activity.
“This class was a great learning experience for me, and I now have the knowledge of what it takes to not only be a great producer but also an editor,” said Joey Ornelas, a UHV senior. “We have had the opportunity of working with some very experienced people in this field, and without their help, this documentary would not have been possible.”
Students also had the opportunity to meet and talk to other filmmakers and video editors.
“It was a long semester and lots of work,” Hernández said. “But seeing how accomplished some of my students feel after this experience, I know it was worth it.”
