Younger people look up to older siblings for a lot of things – motivation, honesty, achievement, guidance and a shoulder to cry on.

University of Houston-Victoria junior Israel “Izzy” Zamora has one more thing he hopes to pass on to his four younger siblings and one adopted brother: a tradition of success.

The 22-year-old is working toward his degree in business management. And when he graduates, he’ll be the first in his family to earn a bachelor’s degree.

The Houston native attended college in Ranger before transferring to UHV to join the men’s soccer team, where he plays wing and forward positions.

“I’ve played soccer all along, my whole life,” he said. “I’ve always loved it.”

His move to Victoria was a good one, and he enjoys both time on the soccer field and in the classroom.

In his free time, he listens to music and does other family-oriented activities.

“I’m really close to the family,” he said. “We like spending time together when we can.”

And while his schedule might keep him on the go, it is manageable. The trick is to use time wisely. In the end, it pays off.

“That’s true for everything, really,” he said. “Not just school. It helps to have a plan.”

Even when he finishes his undergraduate degree, Zamora won’t be done with school. He plans to continue and get a master’s degree in business management.

“People always say that school is hard, but I want to prove I can do it,” he said. “It’s possible.”

Not only will the additional education help in his business endeavors, but it also sets another example for his siblings.

“I want the best for all of us,” he said. “I want them to be able to say, ‘If my brother can go all the way, I can go all the way.’”
