Beat goes on for UHV sophomore business major

For some people, music is a pastime. For others, it’s in the background as they work. But for University of Houston-Victoria sophomore Abel Gonzalez, music is a way of life.
The 19-year-old lifelong music lover spends much of his time listening to tunes and working as a DJ at events.
“I’ll listen to whatever has a good beat,” he said, explaining he draws inspiration from recording artist DJ Tiesto. “I like doing my own mixes, blending one song into the others.”
The dance floor isn’t the only place Gonzales refuses to miss a beat, however. He maintained perfect attendance from first through 12th grade.
“I never got sick, and I liked seeing my friends at school,” he said. “Even when they tried to get me to miss a day, I was always able to go.”
Gonzalez was born in Laredo but moved to Victoria when he was just 9 months old. He graduated from the former Memorial High School in 2010 and moved on to study at UHV.
The transition to college took some adjustment. He had to get used to heavier study schedules and more writing assignments.
“It’s definitely different,” he said of his experience. “But it’s good. It’s a challenge.”
Looking ahead, the business administration major is considering transforming his love of music into a career, and he might open a new club in Victoria.
“Most people my age don’t go to clubs here because of the types of music they have,” he explained. “I’d like to offer something different.”
But he isn’t completely sure about his business plans, and he might decide upon a restaurant instead.
There is plenty of time left to hash out career plans. For the time being, he enjoys taking classes and keeping busy not only with his music, but with workouts at the gym.
He advised others just starting out in college to stay on top of their work. Keeping up with reading and avoiding staying out late on week nights also helps students stay on pace with school work.
“Just study hard,” he said. “Do that, and everything will fall into place.”
