UHV is right choice for Victoria-born ‘numbers guy’

Numbers are great, and math is just fine, but human interaction also is important. That was the thinking behind University of Houston-Victoria senior Jon Stevens’ choice of major.
Always a numbers guy, Stevens opted to focus on finance, rather than accounting.
“Finance, in a way, is more like sales,” he said. “You deal with people. You interact with them rather than sitting in an office and working numbers all day. That’s what I wanted.”
His full-time course schedule isn’t all that keeps him busy. Stevens also works part time as a writing tutor, helping other students with essays, lab reports and more. He enjoys his job at the UHV Academic Center because the bosses understand his course schedule and work his shifts around it. A love of writing also helps.
“Writing has always been easy for me, and it’s something I enjoy,” he said. “It makes time go by a lot quicker when you’re doing something you like.”
In his spare time, he enjoys playing basketball and volleyball, working out and catching the occasional nap.
“That’s when I have a chance,” he said with a laugh. “It doesn’t always happen.”
He advised other students with packed schedules to prioritize. They should get the important things out of the way first, and the rest can follow.
“You can have your fun time after you finish,” he said. “It makes a difference.”
Stevens, 22, was born and raised in Victoria. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in 2007 and began attending UHV after taking community college courses. Cost was one of the reasons he said he decided to go to UHV.
“I looked at other schools but realized I could save money if I went to UHV,” he said. “And I really like the school. It was a good decision to stay.”
Although he has just four classes left until graduation, Stevens plans to remain at UHV afterward to obtain a master’s degree in either accounting or finance.
“I haven’t decided what I’ll focus on yet,” he said. “But I’ll figure it out. I still have some time.”
