Mule Deer to highlight UHV athletic fundraiser

From success on the field to success in the entertainment business, fans will have an opportunity to experience a touch of both on Tuesday at the “A Night for the Jaguars” fundraising event.

Comedian Gary Mule Deer will highlight the event scheduled for Victoria Country Club with proceeds benefitting UHV athletics. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails and a silent auction, followed by dinner and a live auction at 6 p.m. and a performance by Mule Deer at 7 p.m.

Sponsorships and individual tickets for the event are still available on a limited basis. Sponsorships range from $750 to $3,000, while individual tickets can be purchased at $100 per person or $175 per couple.

Mule Deer’s unique comedy and music has set him apart as a one-of-a-kind entertainer. He is no stranger to Victoria, having performed on numerous occasions during the annual Bluebonnet Youth Ranch benefit.

Along with his performances in Victoria, he has performed on every major concert stage in the country and has made more than 350 TV appearances, including “The Tonight Show” and “The Late Show with David Letterman.”

He entertains regularly in Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Atlantic City and Reno as well as on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. For more than 15 years, he has been touring in concert as special guest with Johnny Mathis.

Mule Deer was once roommates with comedian Steven Martin.

Mule Deer hopes to bring a little excitement to the event to help raise funds for a successful UHV athletic program that includes softball, baseball, soccer and golf.

The UHV softball program, in its fifth year, has captured one Association of Independent Institutions Conference title and has advanced to one NAIA National championship series. Coach Keri Lambeth in her four years has compiled a 139-65 record and has averaged at 35 wins a season.

After winning back-to-back A.I.I. titles in 2009 and 2010 and advancing to the NAIA Championships opening round tournament, the Jaguars finished the 2011 season as the A.I.I. runners-up. Coach Terry Puhl has compiled a 127-69 record in four years and has averaged 32 wins a season.

The UHV men’s and women’s soccer programs and golf programs just wrapped up their inaugural seasons in 2010-11 with the men’s golf program finishing second at the A.I.I. Conference tournament, which UHV hosted.

“The funds raised from the community during this event will go to help support over 130 student-athletes who participate on a yearly basis in the UHV athletic program,” UHV Athletics Director Ashley Walyuchow said.
