TimeGate Studios announces internships for UHSSL computer students
SUGAR LAND – Undergraduates studying computer science and digital gaming at the University of Houston System at Sugar Land now have the opportunity for an internship at one of the leading video game development studios in the gaming industry.
TimeGate Studios recently announced it will offer fall semester internships for students working toward a bachelor’s degree in computer science with a concentration in computer science or digital gaming and simulation.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to get industry experience while still enrolled at the university,” said Jeffrey Di Leo, dean of the University of Houston-Victoria School of Arts & Sciences. “To be able to get this professional experience is a huge boost to a student’s knowledge base and resume, and it helps fulfill the university’s mission by providing a highly trained workforce throughout the Coastal Bend region.”
In April, UHV, which provides many of the courses offered at the UH System at Sugar Land, partnered with Sugar Land-based TimeGate to build a cutting-edge motion capture studio. The partnership provides equipment, a facility, training and mentoring for student interns. This will be the first semester that internships are offered as a part of the partnership.
“We are very excited to partner with the University of Houston System to establish and build a strong internship program for students,” said Adel Chaveleh, president and CEO of TimeGate Studios. “Utilizing our state-of-the-art motion capture facility along with enabling direct access to our professional development team is going to help students gain unrivaled real-world game development experience during their internships at TimeGate.”
The internships will help students get experience in what is a key part of modern game development and motion-capture filmmaking. Motion capture technology is utilized in developing various forms of entertainment, from TimeGate’s popular “Section 8,” to new Hollywood movie releases such as “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.”
“One thing the interns will do is put on suits with digital markers, which are then filmed to capture a character’s motions,” said Alireza Tavakkoli, a UHV assistant professor of computer science. “Then the digital characters are added to the markers. It is similar to what was done in the movie ‘Avatar.’”
The internship positions are available for the fall semester. While the positions are in Sugar Land, students at the Victoria campus and the UH System at Cinco Ranch, where UHV also offers programs, are welcome to apply.
“The work through this internship can serve as the capstone project for a student’s graduation requirements,” Tavakkoli said.
