UHV Part-Time Job Fair to link employers with new students
Students at the University of Houston-Victoria looking for part-time work and local employers who need part-time workers can meet at the university’s second Part-Time Job Fair.
The job fair will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday in the Multi-Purpose Room of the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. The Part-Time Job Fair is free for both UHV students and employers. The event is organized by UHV Career Services.
“Last year, our fair went over well with both employers and students,” said Eunice Mesa, UHV Career Services coordinator. “Most of the companies made hires and have continued to use the university to find a pool of quality, part-time workers.”
Representatives from local businesses, nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies, including UHV, must preregister for the event. The registration deadline is 5 p.m. Monday and may be done online at https://myinterfase.com/uhv/employer/home.aspx or by contacting Mesa at 361-570-4369 or mesae@uhv.edu.
Employers should let Mesa know if they need a table, an interview room or electricity access for their table. Free Wi-Fi access is available to all who attend.
“We ask that students dress professionally, come prepared to interview and bring copies of their resume,” said Amy Hatmaker, UHV Career Services specialist. Students do not need to register in advance to attend the fair.
Mesa said the job fair helps students, particularly those new students from out of town, who want to work around their class schedule. The job fair was created last year to assist the students, many of whom expressed an interest in earning wages to help pay for college costs and incidentals.
Businesses expected to attend include Academy Sports, Fastenal, H-E-B Plus, Liberty Tax Services, Sam’s Club, YMCA and the City of Victoria. Students may contact Career Services after Monday for a list of companies that will be represented.
UHV student hires have been beneficial for the YMCA of the Golden Crescent, YMCA Childcare Director Michelle Cavazos said.
“The students we hired were great and really stood out, going beyond what their duties called for,” Cavazos said. “From UHV, we had hired an after-school tutor and two counselors, who all interacted with the children and helped them a lot with their school work and more. We also had another UHV student who was very helpful to our clients in the YMCA workout area.”
