Holy Toledo! Milo Hamilton to Speak at Fall Commencement
Fall graduates of the University of Houston-Victoria can look forward to a unique reward for completing their degrees this year. Houston Astros play-by-play announcer Milo Hamilton, who has broadcast major league baseball for well over 40 years, will give the commencement address at the upcoming graduation ceremony.
In an illustrious sports broadcasting career spanning nearly six decades, Hamilton has been the announcer for the Cardinals, White Sox, Braves, Pirates and Cubs. He is most famous for his coverage of Hank Aaron’s 715th home run which broke the longstanding record set by Babe Ruth. Hamilton received the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Ford C. Frick Award in 1992, was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2000 and then into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2005. Hamilton is a well known community activist in the greater Houston area.
Upon Hamilton’s acceptance of the invitation, UHV President Tim Hudson said, “As someone who grew up listening to Milo Hamilton on the radio, I am thrilled that he has agreed to bring a message to our graduates on this special occasion. To quote Milo, it’ll be a ‘Blue Star Day.’”
In 1996, the UHV administration adopted a fall commencement to better serve the increasing number of graduates. This will be the university’s first commencement to be held outside of Victoria, a recognition of UHV’s growing role in meeting the educational needs of the greater Houston area.
Commencement exercises will be held December 9 at the Merrell Center in Katy. The program is tentatively scheduled to run from 2:30 to 4 p.m. with a light reception to follow. For more information, contact Nancy Love at (361) 570-4351.
