Animal lover and biology major hopes to become vet
Some people might say that college has gone to the dogs.
And, for University of Houston-Victoria sophomore Kassidy Norvill, it’s true. Then again, people also could say it’s gone to the cats, to the birds and so on.
A biology major with a lifelong love of animals, Norvill hopes to make it in the world of veterinary medicine.
“It’s something I’ve always been interested in,” said Norvill, whose two cats provide a bit of at-home experience. “Animals have always been a big part of my life.”
Norvill’s studies are important to her, but she also makes it a point to get hands-on experience when possible. She’s worked with various veterinary offices in the past and hopes to find another position this summer.
“I think it’s good to get out there,” she said of her work with the animals. “It helps.”
Between her full-time course schedule and the time she puts into her after-school waitressing job, Norvill admits she doesn’t have much free time on her hands. Good planning and time management, however, mean it isn’t much of an issue.
“I only work at nights and, during the day, I have time to do my homework and whatever else I need to do,” she said. “As long as you’re organized, it works out.”
Norvill, 20, was born in Fort Worth but moved to Victoria when she was 5. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in 2010 and, after first moving away from home for school, returned to attend UHV.
And she’s happy with her decision to become a Jaguar.
“It’s a better fit for me,” she said. “I’m really happy with the school.”
Norvill is excited to continue her studies and hopes to carve out a spot for herself in the veterinary world.
She advised other students to persevere and keep up with school. It isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it in the end.
