SBDC seminar to discuss hiring, firing employees

Best practices for hiring and training productive employees will be among the topics talked about during an April 27 seminar for small businesses.
The University of Houston-Victoria Small Business Development Center is putting on the free event, which is aimed at those who have the responsibility of hiring, developing and dismissing employees. Participants will learn about current trends in employment and how to establish procedures for legally recruiting, hiring, developing, disciplining and terminating employees.
Employment Life Cycle: Creating Fair and Legal Policies to Recruit, Hire, Develop and Terminate Employees will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the SBDC office, 3402 Ben Wilson St. The seminar is co-sponsored by the Victoria Chamber of Commerce.

SBDC Director Joe Humphreys said effectively managing employees is crucial to business continuity.
“Employees are the lifeblood of companies,” Humphreys said. “It’s important to take a step back and evaluate what you are doing to recruit employees, and how you are approaching training current staff to do more. This seminar will address those subjects, as well as instruct fair and legal ways to interview potential hires and discipline employees when the need arises.”
The seminar will be led by Deirdre Pattillo, a project manager focusing on employer services for the South-West Texas Border Region SBDC Network’s Contracting Resource Center in San Antonio.
Pattillo has served the SBDC community for more than 13 years in various capacities and programs. She is certified as a senior professional in human resources. During the past seven years, she has focused on human resources and regulatory compliance with a particular emphasis on helping businesses engage in emergency preparedness to ensure business continuity and enhance disaster resilience.
The UHV SBDC offers assistance on starting, growing and financing a business; contracting opportunities; and recovering from disaster. It also helps new businesses start and existing businesses expand through a combination of consulting and training in areas like market identification, raising capital and developing a business plan. Most of its services are free to area small business owners. The center serves Aransas, Bee, Calhoun, DeWitt, Gonzales, Goliad, Jackson, Karnes, Lavaca, Refugio and Victoria counties.
