New UHV Career Services Web Site Links Students and Employers

For many college graduates the actual transition from classroom to career field can be a daunting task. To assist in the process, the Office of Career Services at the University of Houston-Victoria has launched a new Web site to connect more students and alumni with more jobs.

Designed to enhance the services offered to students and employers, the new site allows students to search job postings, send online inquiries, and manage multiple resumes and employment-related documents. A streamlined registration process means employers can quickly and easily post jobs to the site, receive online applications directly from the system and sign up for career fairs or other events, such as on-campus recruitment.

“The launch of this new site is an exciting development as it exemplifies UHV’s commitment to serving the needs of students and area employers,” said UHV President Tim Hudson. “By implementing this new system, we continue to enhance our student and employer services.”

Features of the updated site include two new job boards where students and alumni may post their resumes. CareerLink! is a UHV-sponsored job board that allows employers to view student and alumni resumes at no charge. Sponsored by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, NACElink is a nationwide job board that is free to UHV students and alumni and can be accessed by employers for nominal fee.

Also featured will be workshops that students can access and view from home. These online programs are modeled after popular workshops offered by Career Services, including those focused on job search techniques and interviewing skills. The online workshops do not replace the face-to-face workshops sponsored by Career Services but do allow students in an increasingly large service area to access traditionally offered services locally.

“As UHV evolves into a school offering more and more classes online, one of the challenges for Career Services is to meet the needs of students who may never set foot in a classroom but who may still benefit from career counseling,” said Career Services coordinator Eunice Mesa. “This Web site is full of resources that are convenient and relevant and that can be accessed equally by all our students.”

UHV’s Career Services’ mission is to guide students and alumni in career planning, to provide workshops and training to help link students with employers, and to serve as a resource for professional development in the students’ desired fields. Career Services also benefits the community by helping businesses identify and hire highly qualified UHV graduates.

The new Web site, including links to CareerLink! and NACElink, can be viewed at www.uhv.edu/careerservices. For more information, contact Eunice Mesa at (361) 570-4369.
