This year’s Spring Nursing Forum is titled “Culturally Competent Nursing Care: A Vietnamese Focus.” Vi Ho, a nurse and educator dedicated to promoting health in Asian communities, will be the speaker.
After retiring from MD Anderson Cancer Center after 27 years of service, Ho took a full-time job at Texas Woman’s University Houston as an associate clinical professor. She also works part time as a family nurse practitioner in Pro-Health Doctors Clinic in Houston.
Ho regularly appears at health fairs and on educational radio and TV programs to talk about cancer prevention and early detection. She is the founding member of the Vietnamese American Nursing Association, a nonprofit organization serving Vietnamese-American nurses, mentoring student nurses and promoting health in Asian communities.
“She will share her research about Vietnamese health care with us,” said Jere Hammer, an assistant professor in the UHV School of Nursing. “During breaks, attendees can eat Vietnamese food and learn Vietnamese phrases. It should be an exciting morning.”
Hammer said it is important to learn about nursing practices in other cultures. A forum centered on Hispanic communities is being planned for a later date.
The forum will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Multi-Purpose Room of the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. Registration, networking and refreshments will be from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. in the same location. The event also will include a poster contest highlighting evidenced-based nursing practices by UHV graduate nursing students.
The forum is open to any licensed registered nurse, vocational nurse or advance practice nurse. The fee is $25 for nurses and $10 for nursing students. Payment is accepted by check or credit card. Attendees also can earn 2.5 contact hours through the Texas Nurses Association for successfully completing this activity.
Registration ends on Tuesday, and seating is limited. To register online, visit www.uhvconnect.org/event/NursingForum.
The forum is hosted by UHV, the UHV Honor Society of Nursing, DeTar Healthcare System and District 20 of the Texas Nurses Association.
