UHV sophomore served as voice of the students at Jaguar Hall

From rules, to activities and dining hall fare, universities deal with many issues regarding residence halls. Student input helps guide many of the decisions that are made.
That’s where University of Houston-Victoria sophomore Kevin Walker has helped.
Walker served as president of UHV’s Community Council during the 2011-2012 school year. The objective of the council is to make on-campus life the best it can be.
“We were the voice of the students who lived in Jaguar Hall,” Walker said. “We held events and talked on their behalf when it came to things like on-campus food. We just tried to help.”
The group took its work off campus too, working together on community service projects. One event in particular that stood out to Walker was a Christmas clothing drive benefiting the homeless and less fortunate.
“I think that’s the event I was most proud of through the year,” he said. “We liked doing what we could.”
Walker, 19, was born and raised just outside of Houston in Missouri City. He attended Elkins High School. A longtime athlete, he was a member of the school’s track and football teams before graduating in 2011.
Born the fourth of six children, a college education is an expectation in the Walker household. His older siblings went to college before him, and the younger ones will follow.
“It’s just how it is in our family,” said Walker, who earned a spot on the Dean’s List during his first semester as a Jaguar. “Everybody goes to college.”
The biology major is working on a pre-pharmacy academic track and hopes to find pharmaceutical work after graduation. While studies keep him busy, he fills his free time visiting with friends and working out.
Walker’s first year of school is now behind him, and he looks forward to continuing his studies. Still, university life took some adjustment.
He encouraged other students to be themselves when they get to school and to work at being leaders.
“Don’t follow,” he said. “Worry about you, and get the things done that you need to get done. Do that, and you’ll be all right.”
