UHV Nursing School to participate in community health event

SUGAR LAND - The University of Houston-Victoria School of Nursing is partnering with Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital and Fort Bend Independent School District to host the Fifth Annual Care 2 Chat, a free health and wellness conference.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 29 at UH Sugar Land, 14000 University Blvd.
The conference was the idea of Karen Chitty-Boe, director of marketing for Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital.
“After talking with my daughter about her own health, I realized how important it is for us to educate the next generation,” she said. “We created this event and partnered with the UHV School of Nursing to bring resources to community members so they can educate their children.”
Chitty-Boe said she appreciates the School of Nursing’s continued support of the event and the school’s passion for community health and wellness.

Participating in Care 2 Chat is a good partnership for the UHV School of Nursing, Founding Dean Kathryn Tart said.
“Nursing is about health care and prevention, as well as caring for individuals and communities,” she said. “This is a great opportunity for the School of Nursing to provide community outreach and help educate citizens about important health topics.”
Beyond health, conference speakers also will discuss parenting topics such as academics, parenting skills, technology, college readiness and personal growth. Three UHV nursing faculty members will lead education sessions:
- Shainy Varghese, assistant professor, “Texas Health Steps: Visits and Immunizations”
- Adeline Chu, assistant professor, “PAW (Parents Are Watching): Social Networking and Net Lingo – How Much do you Know?”
- Lisette Barton, assistant professor, “To Tattoo or Not to Tattoo – That is the Question”
Along with the education sessions, there will be more than 40 vendors from the community providing health information and services, as well as selling various products. Attendees will have access to complimentary health screenings for blood pressure, bone density and glucose levels. There also will be a free healthy breakfast, free flu shots for the first 100 attendees and various door prizes.
This will be a great community event for anyone raising toddlers, tweens or teens, Tart said.
“Community members enjoy the chance to meet with health care providers at their office,” she said. “Care 2 Chat will allow parents to ask physicians and nurse practitioners all those questions they never have the opportunity to ask during clinic visits.”
