UHV Prepares to Celebrate Black History Month
With February just around the corner, the University of Houston-Victoria is busy preparing for Black History Month festivities. A series of campus exhibits and community events are scheduled, including a black history poster contest, Black History Month parade and black history heritage festival.
The poster contest is open to all Victoria County fifth-grade students in public, private and home schools. Each school will select 10 poster contest finalists whose work will be judged in a countywide competition. Finalists’ posters will be displayed for public viewing in the University Center building at UHV.
On Friday, February 9, a reception will be held to recognize the poster contest winners. The first-place winner will receive two years of paid tuition at both UHV and The Victoria College. The second-place poster winner will receive one year of tuition at both institutions, and the third place winner will receive one semester of tuition at each. Four honorable mention awards will also be presented. The event, which is open to the public, will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will offer light refreshments and entertainment.
The parade will take place the following day, featuring more than 50 float and band entries by civic, charitable, government and education associations. It will begin at Patti Welder Middle School at 10 a.m. and will proceed along North Street to the Victoria Community Center, where the festival will immediately follow. Also open to the public, the festival will include food, entertainment and cultural activities.
“Events such as these that extend educational and cultural opportunities to the community have characterized UHV’s mission and history. We are proud of our involvement with Black History Month celebrations and believe they offer all of us a chance to learn more about our heritage,” said UHV President Tim Hudson.
Black History Month events are co-sponsored by UHV with The Victoria College, the Black History Steering Committee, the Cultural Council of Victoria and Victoria Parks and Recreation Department.
