Nov. 8 Join the Jaguars aims to answer all questions about UHV

A mother and her daughter approached Deborah George, a University of Houston-Victoria financial aid specialist, during the first Join the Jaguars in August and said they knew next to nothing about financial aid.

They came to the right place.

“From A to Z, we talked about everything,” George said. “I explained the UHV Guarantee, Pell grants, scholarship applications and how scholarships worked. The daughter ended up applying for financial aid and going to school here.”

Join the Jaguars is an event for anyone who needs information about UHV or help getting enrolled. The next Join the Jaguars is from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Multi-Purpose Room of the University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. There is no cost to attend, and no advance registration is required.

This event is intended for prospective students, current students, applicants and transfer students. Representatives from each of the UHV academic schools and all student service departments will be in attendance.

During Join the Jaguars, UHV advisers will assist students with completing a UHV application, applying for financial aid, choosing spring courses, and signing up for student housing and meal plans. Attendees also can tour the campus and learn about student organizations and activities.

In terms of financial aid, George said she fielded a variety of questions at the August Join the Jaguars, which drew students from as far away as Austin and San Antonio. One question was about how money is disbursed. Another dealt with what loans are available.

“I talked with a student transferring to UHV who already knew the ins and outs of financial aid,” George said. “He planned on living in a residence hall and was concerned about having enough money for expenses. We were able to discuss the loan options in depth.”

While financial aid and other university departments are available to help by phone and email, George said having a face-to-face event after regular work hours is important.

“Even with all the communication available today, we still are visual people,” George said. “To show people how things work in person is a lot easier. Plus, the one-on-one interaction is better customer service.”

The spring semester will start on Jan. 14. UHV has a continuous admission process, so there are no specific application deadlines to meet. However, students interested in attending spring classes are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to allow time for processing and registration.
