UHV honors Employee of the Year at luncheon

Cherlyn Hodge, a University of Houston-Victoria student advising coordinator in the School of Arts & Sciences, is recognized by UHV President Phil Castille as the university’s 2012 Employee of the Year during Tuesday’s Faculty & Staff Recognition Luncheon.

University of Houston-Victoria staff chose a student advising coordinator as the university’s 2012 Employee of the Year.

Cherlyn Hodge, student advising coordinator in the School of Arts & Sciences, received the top honor Tuesday at the university’s annual Faculty & Staff Recognition Luncheon. University employees attended the event to recognize faculty and staff members celebrating employment anniversaries.

Hodge began working at UHV in 2004. She provides guidance for all of the school’s degree programs and is the adviser for all UHV student athletes. She also serves as an adviser for the Black Student Union.

“It’s a great honor to receive this award,” she said. “It’s also an honor for my fellow advisers. We all work well together. It’s not just a win for me. It’s a win for our advising team.”

Hodge had no idea she would be chosen as Employee of the Year. She said the recognition is even more special because it came from her peers and because UHV is her alma mater. Hodge earned a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice in 2008.

“I’ve worked for UHV for awhile and my favorite part of the job is working with student athletes,” she said. “Every situation is unique, so it’s fun.”

Tracey Fox, director of services for the School of Arts & Sciences, said Hodge is dependable, efficient and a huge asset to the school.

“She is well versed in each of the degree programs as well as admissions policies and procedures,” Fox said. “She deserves to be recognized for her outstanding work ethic and service to UHV.”

UHV staff members cast votes on an email ballot listing each 2012 UHV Employee of the Month who still works at the university. In addition to Hodge, others listed on the ballot were:

  • Mary Field, senior secretary in the School of Business Administration
  • Carolyn Fritz, records coordinator in the Office of Admissions
  • Eliza Fortner, financial aid specialist in the Financial Aid Office
  • Sandy Mendez, senior secretary in the School of Business Administration

  • Roberto Tonsul, instructional technology specialist in the School of Nursing
  • Yole Degado, senior accounting analyst in Finance
  • Miles Harrison, LAN administrator in Information Technology
  • Ralph Castorena, student recruitment coordinator in LEAD

Hodge received a $500 check, a UHV T-shirt and a plaque. Her name also will be engraved on the Employee of the Year plaque displayed in UHV University West.

A second Employee Recognition Luncheon will take place at UH Sugar Land on Feb. 19 for those UHV employees who work at that teaching center or the UH System at Cinco Ranch.
