UHV to offer job fairs for prospective teachers

University of Houston-Victoria Career Services and the School of Education & Human Development are hosting two education job fairs to bring together those looking for a teaching job with organizations searching for teachers.

The first Education Job Fair will be from 1 to 3 p.m. April 23 at the UH System at Cinco Ranch, 4242 S. Mason Road in Katy. The second will be from 10 a.m. to noon April 25 in the UHV University Center Multi-Purpose Room, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St.

The job fairs are open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to dress professionally and bring copies of their resume.

Fred Litton

The UHV School of Education & Human Development partners with Career Services to help students succeed before and after graduation. Career Services staff members offer assistance in resume writing, interview skills and helping education students prepare for a professional career. The Education Job Fair is just another way to help students get ready for graduation, said Fred Litton, dean of the education school.

“There is a shortage of teachers in many school districts,” he said. “We are always looking for ways to connect prospective school districts with our students who graduate certified and ready to teach.”

Amy Hatmaker

Amy Hatmaker, UHV Career Services coordinator, agrees the job fair is a great way to pair school districts with students.

“At the Education Job Fair, we have gathered various school districts from the Crossroads region and Greater Houston all in one place,” she said. “Attendees are able to easily see the differences in the school districts to decide which is best for them.”

The Education Career Fair isn’t just for those who have a degree in education. Those with degrees in other fields who are interested in becoming teachers also are encouraged to attend. Representatives will be available to discuss ways to become a certified teacher.

Employers interested in participating in the Education Career Fair must reserve a spot by April 19. The $45 registration fee gives entry to companies for both job fairs. The fee includes tables, electricity, Wi-Fi, refreshments for those at the Cinco Ranch job fair and lunch for two recruiters at the Victoria job fair.
