UHV nursing student earns scholarship from health care foundation

SUGAR LAND – University of Houston-Victoria student Dana N. Daniels recently was awarded a pair of $2,000 scholarships to help pay for courses to complete her Second Degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
The scholarships were from the Healthcare and Nursing Education Foundation in Houston.
“I am extremely grateful to have been chosen to receive this award,” Daniels said. “I hope more students from UHV School of Nursing will apply for this scholarship in the future and receive the same opportunity.”
The Healthcare and Nursing Education Foundation awarded academic scholarships to 25 Houston-area students dedicated to pursuing a career in nursing. A Houston native, Daniels is taking classes at UH Sugar Land, where UHV offers many programs. The foundation gives scholarships based on several factors, including academics, leadership ability, community involvement, financial need and commitment to a nursing career in the Houston area. Daniels plans on becoming a nurse anesthetist.
Daniels learned about the scholarship on the UHV School of Nursing’s website. She applied and was invited to interview with the foundation’s staff. The foundation awarded Daniels a $2,000 scholarship for the summer semester and another $2,000 scholarship for the fall.

The awards were given at the 2013 Scholarship Awards luncheon earlier this month. Kathryn Tart, founding dean of the UHV School of Nursing, attended along with Daniels, her mother and one of UHV’s past recipients, Shermal Maddox.
“We are extremely grateful for the support of HNEF for nursing education,” Tart said. “Dana exemplifies the mission of the Second Degree BSN program. We are delighted she received this honor.”
Daniels said the luncheon in the Tea Room at the Junior League of Houston was more than she expected.
“I had the opportunity to meet many other scholarship recipients from other nursing schools,” she said. “I also got to enjoy lunch and conversations with HNEF board members and Dean Tart.”
Daniels previously earned a biology degree from Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans. She spoke highly of UHV’s Second Degree BSN program even though the coursework has been challenging.
“When you have a goal in mind, you realize that challenges are only temporary and can be overcome,” she said. “Furthermore, this program has definitely improved my organization and time-management skills.”
The Healthcare and Nursing Foundation strives to make a critical difference in the health of the Greater Houston community by providing nursing scholarships and community grants. The foundation provides financial assistance to more than 60 nursing students.
The University of Houston-Victoria, located in the heart of the Coastal Bend region since 1973 in Victoria, Texas, offers courses leading to more than 80 academic programs in the schools of Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; and Education, Health Professions & Human Development. UHV provides face-to-face classes at its Victoria campus, as well as an instructional site in Katy, Texas, and online classes that students can take from anywhere.
