UHV SBDC to host four-part seminar for new business owners

New and aspiring small business owners will have the opportunity to gain basic business and organizational training during a four-part series hosted by the University of Houston-Victoria Small Business Development Center.
“Smart Money for Small Business” is a seminar series developed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and the U.S. Small Business Administration. The classes will be taught by Lindsay Young, a UHV SBDC certified business advisor III. She has a financial background that includes experience and training in retail sales, risk management, anti-money laundering and fraud.
UHV SBDC Director Joe Humphreys said the seminar series is designed for those thinking about starting a business as well as those who already own a small business.

“Managing a small business can be challenging, but this seminar will help small business owners discover effective financial strategies,” he said. “The seminar series is great opportunity to learn the basics as well as financial tips and tricks for running a successful business.”
The program begins with basic concepts of business finance and management, and then Young will delve into more advanced training and technical areas with attendees. She will cover topics such as organization types, time management, tax information and risk management. Young also will discuss banking services available to small businesses and financial information.
The series will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 27, Oct. 4, 11 and 18 at the UHV SBDC Victoria office, 3402 N. Ben Wilson St. Space is limited, so interested participants are encouraged to register soon. All UHV SBDC trainings are open to the public.
The UHV SBDC offers assistance on starting, growing and financing a business; contracting opportunities; and recovering from disaster. It’s business counseling services are free to area small business owners in Aransas, Bee, Calhoun, DeWitt, Gonzales, Goliad, Jackson, Karnes, Lavaca, Refugio and Victoria counties.
