UHV and De León Club to Host 21st Annual Symposium
The University of Houston-Victoria and the De León Club of Victoria will present the 21st annual Martin De León Symposium on the Humanities on Saturday, April 28. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Johnson Symposium Center on the Victoria College campus.
This year’s theme focuses on Mexican Americans in higher education. Presentation topics include “Tu y Las Nubes y Higher Education,” “The Enemy Within: Implications for Higher Education in Texas,” and “At the Water’s Edge: Legal and Historic Roles of Latinos in Gaining Access to Higher Education.”
“Each year the De León Symposium highlights topics of interest and relevancy in today’s society,” said Dr. Dan Jaeckle, professor in the School of Arts and Sciences at UHV and chair of the symposium event. “We are proud to have brought this symposium to the community for over 20 years.”
Featured speakers will include Dr. Valeriano Cantú, dean of instructional services at Coastal Bend College in Beeville; Dr. Rosario Martinez Castillo, president of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education; and Dr. Norma Cantú, professor of law and education at the University of Texas at Austin.
UHV President Dr. Tim Hudson added, “Increasing access to higher education for Mexican Americans is a topic being addressed across the state and nation. As this population continues to grow as the minority majority, opportunities for educational attainment must grow with it.”
The De León Club of Victoria was organized in 1965 and was named for the city’s founder, Martin De León. It is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting business and encouraging civic participation to improve the quality of life in Victoria.
Attendance at the symposium is free of charge and open to the public. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.
