High school students to visit UHV for education conference
An estimated 150 high school students will learn more about what it’s like to be a teacher and compete in contests during a regional conference Oct. 25 at the University of Houston-Victoria.
This is the fifth year UHV has hosted the Region III conference of the Texas Association of Future Educators, a statewide organization that offers students the opportunity to explore the teaching profession.

The conference will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. Students from Edna, Ganado, Industrial, Hallettsville, Columbus, Rice Consolidated, Van Vleck and Palacios school districts are expected to attend.
Fred Litton, dean of the UHV School of Education & Human Development, will be the keynote speaker.
“We are excited to be hosting the regional conference for the fifth time,” Litton said. “We have great working relationships with area school districts. The conference is a chance to showcase our programs and campus while providing a fun learning environment.”
High school students will get a tour of the campus, and they will learn more about the teaching profession during workshops. They also will eat lunch at UHV.

“This is a great opportunity for aspiring teachers to get a feel of what college life is like and to hear from faculty members that have years of teaching experience,” said Sandy Hybner, senior recruitment coordinator for the UHV School of Education & Human Development.
Attendees will compete in nine different contests during the conference, such as giving a two-minute impromptu speech, creating a storybook and presenting a project portfolio based on an energy lesson. Students who participate in the Education Leadership Fundamentals contest will take a 30-minute test on leadership theory and best practices related to the teacher certification exam.
UHV faculty and staff will serve as judges for the on-site contests. An additional 17 TAFE competitions will take place at the high schools before the conference. Winners from the Region III contests will go on to compete in the statewide competitions.
The University of Houston-Victoria, located in the heart of the Coastal Bend region since 1973 in Victoria, Texas, offers courses leading to more than 80 academic programs in the schools of Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; and Education, Health Professions & Human Development.
