UHV to graduate more than 500 students Saturday

KATY – University of Houston-Victoria graduates will celebrate their accomplishments, receive a diploma cover and hear from a prominent real estate financier at Saturday’s fall commencement ceremony.

Phil Castille

A total of 538 graduates are scheduled to walk in the ceremony, which begins at 11 a.m. in the Leonard E. Merrell Center, 6301 S. Stadium Lane in Katy. Seating is open, and family and friends may arrive as early as 10 a.m.

“Commencement provides students, faculty, staff and administration with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates in front of their families and friends,” UHV President Phil Castille said. “Graduation day is a major milestone after a great deal of hard work and dedication.”

Steven Kaufman, president and CEO of Zeus Mortgage Ltd. and a UHV alumnus, will be the ceremony’s keynote speaker. Kaufman is a leading expert on mortgages and real estate financing. He has coordinated more than $1 billion in real estate financing for companies including American Express, Hewlett Packard and Exxon Mobil.

Steven Kaufman

Kaufman earned a Master of Science in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship in 2011 from UHV. A frequent participant at UHV School of Business Administration events, Kaufman has spoken to business students during the school’s alumni week, and he was keynote speaker for the fall 2012 Bachelor of Business Administration Conference. He also is a member of the UHV School of Business Administration Dean’s Advisory Council.

“It’s always a pleasure to have one of our own distinguished alumni return to address our newest graduates,” Castille said. “Mr. Kaufman is a dynamic, young entrepreneur who has accumulated numerous accolades in his business career. He’ll do a great job addressing our graduates on their special day.”

The UHV School of Nursing will have a pinning ceremony for its graduates at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Merrell Center. More than 100 students graduating from the Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Second Degree BSN and Master of Science in Nursing programs will receive special pins.

Marilyn Davis

The nursing graduates and their families and friends will hear a keynote address from Marilyn Davis, a Texas State Board of Nursing member. Davis has more than three decades of professional nursing experience in positions of leadership, management, training and financial management. She is a charter member of UHV’s Phi Chi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International nursing honor society.
