UHV SBDC to address business opportunities for people over 50
The University of Houston-Victoria Small Business Development Center is partnering with the U.S. Small Business Administration and AARP to educate community members older than 50 about the benefits of owning a small business.

According to AARP, more than 7.4 million Americans older than age 50 work for themselves.
“These entrepreneurs represent one of the fastest growing groups of new business owners,” said Farhang Niroomand, dean of the UHV School of Business Administration. “Many in the Baby Boomer generation are starting to recognize the benefits of working for themselves as they get older.”
The “Encore Entrepreneurs” workshop will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 30 in the Multi-Purpose Room of the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. The workshop will educate attendees about valuable free resources available for entrepreneurs older than 50.
Speakers at the event will include representatives from the SBDC, SBA, AARP, SCORE, Women’s Business Center and others. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from the experiences of successful “encore entrepreneurs,” who will share their lessons learned and advice for making the leap to business ownership.

“As people near retirement, they start exploring new opportunities for generating income,” UHV SBDC Director Joe Humphreys said. “Owning your own business is a great way to supplement income for retirement. If you want to turn a hobby into a business or finally have the resources to start the business of your dreams, this workshop is a great jumping off point to success.”
The UHV SBDC offers assistance on starting, growing and financing a business; contracting opportunities; and recovering from disaster. Most of its services are free to area small business owners in Aransas, Bee, Calhoun, DeWitt, Gonzales, Goliad, Jackson, Karnes, Lavaca, Refugio and Victoria counties. It is part of a nationwide small business assistance program serving the small business community and federal, state and local governments.
