UHV School of Education Hosts Summer Math Camp
The second day of the math camp is scheduled for Friday, July 20, beginning at 10 a.m. at the same location.
According to Dr. Barba Patton, director of the Center for Academic Excellence, the workshop is designed with two very important purposes in mind. This event gives UHV teacher candidates a chance to discover entertaining ways to teach math concepts to students. The camp also provides a way of keeping the children’s math skills sharp over the summer months.
All the UHV students are seniors, and most will be student teaching in the fall. "This camp is just one more experience to help them prepare for the classroom," said Patton.
The children had a chance to do a variety of activities that required some applications of math, such as measuring the distance of a water pistol stream to playing board games that required a specific math skill.
“Children learn by doing,” said Dr. Suzanne LaBrecque, UHV provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “These math camp experiences help young students understand number concepts and develop positive feelings about mathematics. In addition, these campers learn to work with adults and other children in problem solving. This camp is definitely a win-win experience for all participants.”
Amanda Baros, a UHV education major, expressed her excitement over the math camp’s turnout.
“I think this has been a huge success,” said Baros. “Typically, when you hear something like ‘math camp,’ you don’t automatically associate it with ‘fun.’ But all the kids are energetic and participating in all the activities. It’s just great.”
Patton said that she hopes to make the math camp an annual event because of its success.
There are a few vacancies for the July 20 session, according to Patton. The cost for this summer workshop is only $20, which includes a camp T-shirt, lunch and snacks. The camp is open to children who will be in the first through fifth grade in the fall.
