UHV to Kick Off Hispanic Heritage Month
UHV, the Ballet Folklorico de Victoria and the Children's Discovery Museum are scheduled to host the Hispanic Heritage Parade and Festival in downtown Victoria at 10 a.m.
Also on Sept. 15, the Spanish Speaking Initiative is hosting a mariachi concert featuring Mariachi Las Altenas at Victoria College Auditorium at 6 p.m. This award-winning mariachi group performs throughout the U.S. Tickets will be $3 and sold at the door.
The Hispanic Heritage Art Exhibit reception, featuring Hispanic artist Jose Trevino from Austin, will be held in the University Center Building on Sunday, Sept 16 from 4 to 6 p.m.
Tina Kidder, Spanish-Speaking Initiative art exhibit coordinator, said she was excited about this year’s exhibit.
“Like all the other activities for Hispanic Heritage Month, the art exhibit is for everyone in the community,” Kidder said. “The art is definitely worthy of high marks in its own right, and I also think the exhibit gives someone who might not be very familiar with the Hispanic culture a chance to see many facets of it on canvas.”
“This area is full of rich cultural influences, and it’s good to see the university and the community come together and take time to celebrate them,” UHV President Tim Hudson said. “Hispanic Heritage Month gives us the opportunity to discover or to remember some of the wonderful Hispanic traditions. I always look forward to this time of the year.”
