UH System Board of Regents names Morgan UHV president
After almost two years as the University of Houston-Victoria’s interim president, Vic Morgan is getting a promotion.
The UH System Board of Regents voted to give Chancellor Renu Khator authority to extend Morgan’s contract and named him president of the university effective immediately. His contract now extends to Aug. 31, 2017, a year past his current contract.
“I am honored by this vote of confidence from the chancellor and the UH System Board of Regents,” Morgan said. “UHV is an outstanding university with plenty of potential for continued growth and success. I am pleased to have the opportunity to continue serving the university and the region.”
During his time at UHV, Morgan has presided over many developments and changes for the university, including the opening of University North and the Center for the Arts in Victoria, bringing Dalkey Archive Press to the university, and getting approval to move UHV programs located in Greater Houston to a new building in Katy. The university also has added new programs and concentrations during his tenure, including kinesiology, human resources management and petroleum technology.
In the previous Texas legislative session, Morgan led UHV’s efforts to request state funding for the university’s growth and development. The Legislature gave UHV $60 million in campus construction bonds for academic expansion and land acquisition.
Before coming to UHV, Morgan was the 10th president of Sul Ross State University, a regional comprehensive state university with an enrollment of just over 3,000 students, including the three remote communities of Del Rio, Eagle Pass and Uvalde as an off-campus center called the Rio Grande College of Sul Ross State University. The Texas State University System Board of Regents appointed him president in 1990, making Morgan the first president of Sul Ross to come from within the ranks of its faculty.
He served 19 years as president before stepping down in 2009. The Board of Regents of the Texas State University System passed resolutions renaming the Sul Ross State University Center in honor of Morgan and his wife, Mary Jane.
He then served as special assistant to the vice chancellor and president designate of the University of North Texas at Dallas from December 2009 until August 2010. In that role, he assisted the university and the UNT System with the process of transitioning UNT at Dallas from a UNT branch campus to a freestanding master’s-level institution.
During his time in Victoria, Morgan also is serving in the Victoria Lion’s Club. He is active in the Central Church of Christ. His hobbies include motorcycling, golf, shooting sports, classical music and travel. He and his wife, Mary Jane, have two sons, Jason (deceased) and Jeremy, who is a partner with KPMG in Houston.
