UHV to offer summer CPR certification class
The University of Houston-Victoria School of Education, Health Professions & Human Development will offer an American Red Cross emergency training course for the first time to students and community members.
The “Red Cross Responding to Emergencies” course is the American Red Cross First Aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator certification course. No prior knowledge of health care or medical experience is needed.
“This course offers students and community members the opportunity to find out what it’s like to perform life-saving techniques on adults, children and infants,” said Sara Rodriguez, a UHV visiting health studies assistant professor. “A lot of people aren’t aware of how physical these techniques can be.”
Although the course is part of the curriculum for students pursuing degrees in health studies through the UHV School of Education, Health Professions & Human Development, the five-week course is open to all students and community members. Area residents can sign up to audit the course, which means they can participate but will not receive college credit.
The course will be offered May 31 to June 30. Registration for all summer and fall courses opens Monday.
The content taught in the course is the standard information in a basic Red Cross certification. However, while most people take a course that offers the training in a single session spanning several hours, this course will allow students to take their time and become thoroughly familiar with the information and techniques needed to save lives, Rodriguez said.
“We want students to become really comfortable with these skills,” she said. “These skills are important for anyone who plans to have a career in health studies or even someone who just deals with people on a daily basis. Medical emergencies can happen anywhere, and we want to equip people to handle them.”
At the end of the semester, students will take a practical exam. Each student will be presented with an emergency scenario and evaluated on his response.
The university will provide everything for the course, including reading materials, practice AED machines and mannequins. There are 16 spots available. Community members interested in auditing the course should contact the UHV Student Billing Office at 361-570-4833.
