UHV alumni enjoy camaraderie during Astros trip
University of Houston-Victoria alumni had a chance to reunite with old friends and make new ones during a road trip Saturday to a Houston Astros game at Minute Maid Park
A total of 75 UHV alumni and their guests attended Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, and many rode to the game in a charter bus from Victoria.
“The response was incredible for the Astros trip,” said Kira Mudd, UHV director of alumni relations and annual giving. “We had a full bus and a large seating block at the game. Most of the tickets were already gone two weeks before the game.”
Mudd said the idea behind the trip was to create opportunities for UHV alumni to be engaged and reconnect with the university and with one another.
“It was a great trip,” said Debra Williams, a UHV alumna and a member of the UHV President’s Regional Advisory Board. “It was family oriented and enjoyed by participants of all ages. I renewed some old friendships, and I’m looking forward to the next event.”
An alumni trip to a UH basketball game was held in February. An outing to a UH football game along with a tailgate is being planned for the fall.
Several alumni told Mudd they are excited UHV has started these trips.
“We have 4,000 UHV alumni in Victoria and the surrounding areas, so there are a lot of possible connections that could be made among nearby alumni,” Mudd said. “They can benefit from relationships with their fellow alumni, whether it’s a friendship or a professional relationship. This trip was a perfect example of alumni wanting to be involved.”
The Astros jumped ahead 6-0 on its way to a 7-2 victory over the Angels. Evan Gattis hit two home runs and Carlos Correa also hit one out of the ballpark. Oscar Torres, a UHV alumnus and student recruitment coordinator, caught a home run ball during batting practice.
“The event was well organized, and the $30 price for the ticket, transportation, food and drinks was a steal,” Torres said.
Ashley Mouton, a 2014 UHV graduate from Victoria, said she’s glad the UHV Office of University Advancement offers fun gatherings.
“It makes me feel like I am a part of the family after many years in college,” she said. “It also makes me proud to say I am an alumna of UHV.”
