UHV’s undergraduate finance program named second most affordable in U.S.
When it comes to offering a quality, affordable business degree in finance, the University of Houston-Victoria is one of the best in the nation.
That was the conclusion of the experts at GreatCollegeDeals.net when they created their 2016 Finance Degree Online: 15 Best Deals list. The Bachelor of Business Administration in finance offered by the UHV School of Business Administration was ranked second in the nation.
“In addition to a constant emphasis on academic excellence, UHV’s focus on offering affordable, convenient access to higher education is vital to students’ success,” said Farhang Niroomand, dean of the UHV School of Business Administration. “This ranking is yet another feather in the university’s cap and validation of the school’s efforts.”
When creating the list, GreatCollegeDeals.net considered public and private universities and colleges with a net price of less than $23,000 a year. It ranked the colleges based on that information as well as points awarded for the percentage of undergraduate applicants admitted, small class sizes, low student-to-faculty ratio, availability to graduate business and finance degree online programs, and rankings in the 2016 edition of Best Colleges published by U.S. News and World Report. When there was a tie between schools, the university with the lowest net price was ranked higher.
UHV and Dickinson State University in Dickinson, N.D., tied for the top two spots with 12 points each. However, Dickinson State’s net tuition was slightly less than UHV’s, placing the North Dakota university in the top spot.
The cost of earning a degree is important, but UHV has many other elements that make its BBA in finance exceptional, said Xavier Garza-Gomez, a UHV professor of finance and chair of the Finance Department. Students work on projects and simulations that feature real-world financial data from actual companies. At the end of the degree program, business students work in teams to analyze a business as part of the school’s case competition.
“Our faculty focuses on teaching key elements of what companies need,” Garza-Gomez said. “We teach investments, banks, insurance, real estate, international finance and more, so our students will be able to fit into any area of the financial industry.”
In addition to the faculty’s excellent instruction and access to real-world material, students also benefit from access to online tools and an excellent support staff.
“UHV has offered online courses for years, and we have developed a strong system that ensures everyone has easy access,” Garza-Gomez said. “That includes access to our faculty. Whether it’s online video conferences, chat boards or in person, our faculty members are willing to invest time to help their students succeed.”
