New sculpture on display at UHV University North
A Dallas businessman has donated an abstract metal sculpture to add some pizazz to the lobby of a University of Houston-Victoria academic and economic development building.
“Unending Cooperation,” sculpted by George Tobolowsky, was donated to UHV by Don Kivowitz. The artwork is installed inside UHV University North near the south entrance.
It’s the second substantial gift to UHV from Kivowitz, who manages a conglomerate of corporations and limited partnerships. In 2014, Kivowitz and Heber Lacerda, a health care executive and two-time speaker in the UHV School of Business Administration Distinguished Speaker Series, donated $150,000 to the business school to set up a professorship.
“Mr. Kivowitz has been a great friend to the university, and he has employed many of our graduates,” UHV President Vic Morgan said. “I want to thank him for his kindness and generosity.”
The sculpture is 6-feet, 7-inches tall. The top half contains bent and looped metal castoffs.
Tobolowsky is a Dallas native who spent several decades building a successful business and legal career. He did not start producing art until 2005. During the past decade, he has produced more than 425 sculptures, many of which are in museums and public art exhibitions.
Tobolowsky makes abstract metal sculptures from steel and stainless steel. The materials are bulky industrial metal castoffs he finds in scrap yards and fabrication plants. He then fits scraps together like a jigsaw puzzle into balanced compositions.
“It’s an outstanding piece of art, and I’m sure it will be admired and talked about for years to come,” Morgan said. “The artist has quite the eye for taking these castoffs and turning them into beautiful sculptures.”
