UHV undergraduate marketing program earns national rank

Accessibility, affordability and a return on investment were three of the reasons the University of Houston-Victoria’s Bachelor of Applied Arts & Sciences in marketing recently received a national ranking.

Jeffrey Di Leo

College Choice, a website dedicated to helping students find the right college, ranked the University of Houston-Victoria eighth on its 15 Best Online Bachelor’s in Marketing Degrees 2016 list. UHV was the only Texas school on the list.

“It’s exciting to see the BAAS in Marketing receive this recognition,” said Jeffrey Di Leo, dean of the UHV School of Arts & Sciences. “Quality and affordability are two of the cornerstones of UHV’s excellence, and rankings such as this are clear validations of that.”

The BAAS program is unique because it allows students more leeway to pursue specific academic interests while earning their degrees, said Yun Wan, a UHV professor of computer information systems and director of the BAAS program. In the marketing concentration, students can take courses that range from business marketing to digital marketing or communications.

“The program is designed to be flexible,” Wan said. “We offer a range of marketing interests through a collaboration between the School of Arts & Sciences and the School of Business Administration. That way, our students can pursue whatever aspect of marketing draws their interest.”

The BAAS program typically is used by students who transfer to UHV from community or technical colleges, Wan said. A student with an associate degree can complete a BAAS in as little as a year and a half to two years. However, in recent years, more freshmen and international students are joining the program.

In the ranking, College Choice cited UHV’s affordability as well as the convenience of online courses. That accessibility is a result of years of experience and experimentation, Wan said.

“UHV is one of the trailblazers of online learning in South Texas,” he said. “Our goal is to reach out to students wherever they are, and that has resulted in a sophisticated online infrastructure that serves all of our students’ needs.”
