UHV President’s Regional Advisory Board elects new members
The new members elected to three-year terms are Ron Hyde of Texas Air Patrol Inc. in Kenedy; Arlene Marshall of Calhoun County Economic Development Corp. in Port Lavaca; and Janet Leatherwood of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital in Sugar Land.

“I am delighted that these fine citizens have agreed to join the others who comprise our most important advisory board,” UHV President Tim Hudson said. “Their input and insight will help UHV continue on its path to becoming a university of choice for our students and our region.”
Margaret Rice, Hudson’s executive assistant, also said she is excited about the new board members.
“Our advisory board offers valuable insight to help UHV stay connected and relevant to the communities we serve,” Rice said. “We appreciate their dedicated service to the university and our region. Our three new members are an excellent fit for this outstanding leadership group, and each brings expertise that will assist us in fulfilling our mission.”
The board serves as UHV’s principal external advisory body with a mission of strengthening and advancing the university and its programs, and providing counsel for its strategic direction.
There are 19 voting 2007-2008 board members with Susan Armstrong Cain of Armstrong Warehouse and Transfer Co. in Victoria serving as chairwoman.
Hyde was elected to the board because of his experience as a South Texas businessman since 1975. He is co-founder and president of Texas Air Patrol, the parent company of Stetson Aviation Inc.; general partner in Greater Texas Equities; and CEO of five credit unions.
Through Hyde’s involvement with various organizations, it is obvious he believes in the importance of community service. He has served on numerous boards throughout the years including the Kenedy Independent School District Board of Trustees, the Kenedy Chamber of Commerce and the Kenedy Library Board.
“I bring a desire to raise the level of awareness in our area that obtaining a formal education is achievable regardless of economic status,” Hyde said. “I also would like to sound the trumpets, so to speak, on the lifetime benefits of an education. It’s not just about money but also about equipping people to meet the challenges and opportunities associated with an ever-changing, technologically influenced society. An education also provides a communication foundation to aid citizens in expressing their thoughts clearly and concisely on complex issues.”
Hyde graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree. He majored in accounting.
Marshall has been a community leader in Port Lavaca for years and is the president of the Calhoun County Economic Development Corp. She formerly was a Calhoun County judge and has been the secretary/treasurer of Marshall Auto and Truck Center. She also was the owner of Houston’s Newman International Inc., a small business that represented foreign businesses, primarily in the oil and gas industry.
“I am most honored to be a member of the PRAB,” Marshall said. “Being a graduate of the University of Houston, I have always had a heart for the growth and development of the UH system, and I firmly believe the Victoria campus is a very integral part of the overall educational system. This campus has afforded degrees to so many who would otherwise not have had an opportunity to attend college, especially degrees in education to provide excellent teachers for our youth.”
Marshall is a member of numerous boards including the Victoria College Foundation, Workforce Solutions of the Golden Crescent and past president of the Port Lavaca Rotary Club. She also is a past national officer and past foundation president of Delta Zeta sorority. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston.
Leatherwood is the vice president and chief nursing officer of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. She is a member of the Texas Organization of Nursing Executives and has a number of healthcare-related articles published in various journals. She has experience in both the nonprofit and for-profit healthcare sectors.
“My commitment to UHV is to provide support and guidance in expanding the professional and allied healthcare programs that will be offered by UHV,” Leatherwood said. “Just as Dr. Hudson anticipates the needs of students and the community, I see the ever-growing need for current and future healthcare professionals unaddressed. I envision the development of programs locally that will provide a pathway for those interested in expanding potential career opportunities in healthcare.”
Leatherwood received her master’s degree in nursing from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Houston Baptist University in Houston. Prior to joining Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, she worked for Columbia HCA Healthcare Corp.
