Calhoun student wins overall awards in UHV/VC math, computer science event
High school students Aimee Charbula, left, and Tanya Armstrong use a robot to move a tennis ball. They built the robot on Thursday during the University of Houston-Victoria/Victoria College Math and Computer Science Awareness Day. |
In both categories, Lu received a $500 scholarship to attend VC and a $2,000 scholarship to go to UHV. Scholarships to UHV and VC also went to Memorial High School student Chiping Yeh, who was the second place individual overall winner in math; and Calhoun High School student Kevin Holder, who was the second place individual overall winner in computer science.
They were among approximately 100 area high school students who attended the event and had the opportunity to construct robots, explore career opportunities in math and computer science, and learn new programming commands.
The students also took written math and computer science tests, and those who scored the highest were recognized during an awards ceremony. Sponsors of Math and Computer Science Awareness Day were UHV, VC, Alcoa and Dow.
