Free seminar teaches how to sell around the world

Editor's note: This event has been canceled.

Businesses in the Victoria region can find out how to sell to the entire world May 13 at a free half-day conference underwritten by the University of Houston-Victoria School of Business Administration.

Entrepreneurs and business operators will learn how it’s done at the U.S. Trade Symposium Series from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the UHV Multipurpose Room in the University Center building, 3007 N. Ben Wilson.

“A large number of local firms are capable of competing on an international level, which comes as a surprise to most of them,” said Joe Harper, director of the UHV Small Business Development Center, another sponsor of the event. “Once we show them how to be a part of the global economy, they find there is literally a whole world of customers out there for them.”

Sessions at the conference will include how to find international buyers, get paid by them, and find financing to put a deal together, said Rhiannon Smith with the UHV School of Business Administration.

The topics will be presented by experts brought in from the Export-Import Bank of the United States, the Small Business Administration and the U.S. Commercial Service.

While selling around the world improves the profit margins of businesses, it also improves the local economy, an economic development official said.

“Bringing in money from outside of a community is the key way to grow its economy,” said Dale Fowler, president of the Victoria Economic Development Corp, another sponsor of the event. “In today’s global economy, that money can be dollars, yen, pesos or any other currency. What is important is we can, and must, bring it to Victoria.”

Seats for the event are limited, so interested participants are asked to register by Tuesday by contacting Smith at 361-570-4323 or smithr@uhv.edu. Attendees also can register with Smith for one-on-one consultations with presenters after the symposium.

Other sponsors for the event include the Export-Import Bank of the United States, the U.S. Commercial Service and the South-West Texas Border Small Business Development Center Network.
