School of Nursing takes time during National Nurses Week to announce summer forum
Editor's note: The date of this forum has been changed to Aug. 7.
A University of Houston-Victoria Nursing Forum on July 31 will give area nursing students and nurses tips about how to build a career and the different nursing jobs available depending on their education level.
"We want to talk about how to build a career, not just have a job," said Denise Neill, co-director of the UHV School of Nursing.
The announcement about the forum was made during National Nurses Week, which is celebrated annually from May 6, also known as National Nurses Day, through May 12, the birthday of modern nursing founder Florence Nightingale.
The UHV Nursing Forum will last several hours in the Multipurpose Room of the University Center building, 3007 N. Ben Wilson. The exact time of the forum will be decided at a later date. UHV faculty and area nurses will talk about different opportunities in nursing and how they launched their nursing careers in trauma, management, advanced practice, women's health, education and other areas. Information about the different nursing programs available at UHV also will be provided.
The idea for the forum came from the UHV Nursing Advisory Board at a meeting last month. The 10-member board is made up of local nursing leaders who give Neill advice about what the School of Nursing can do to meet the community's needs.
Although UHV has offered a Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program since the fall of 2006, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved the school designation in December. A search is underway for a dean to lead UHV's newest school.
The School of Nursing also offers a RN to Master of Science in Nursing bridge program and its new MSN program. The first students working toward their MSN will start classes this summer. There are 32 students enrolled so far, and the first candidates for graduation are expected in May of 2010.
