UHV LEAD Donates Computers to CISD Go Center
The Letting Education Achieve Dreams initiative at the University of Houston-Victoria recently donated two Dell Dimension 3000 Series computers to Calhoun Independent School District’s Go Center.
Located at Calhoun High School, the Go Center provides high school students and Port Lavaca community members with resources to research higher education opportunities. Go Center visitors can access the computers to apply for financial aid, conduct scholarship research, and search for information on specific colleges and universities.
LEAD utilized funds from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s First Generation College Student Grant to donate the computers and to award a $1,000 scholarship to Cecilia Ruiz, a senior at CHS who has used the Go Center’s resources. Ruiz was selected based on her essay submission detailing her long-term career goals and her classification as a first-generation college student upon entering her first year of college.
The University of Houston-Victoria, located in the heart of the Coastal Bend region since 1973 in Victoria, Texas, offers courses leading to more than 80 academic programs in the schools of Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; and Education, Health Professions & Human Development. UHV provides face-to-face classes at its Victoria campus, as well as an instructional site in Katy, Texas, and online classes that students can take from anywhere. UHV supports the American Association of State Colleges and Universities Opportunities for All initiative to increase awareness about state colleges and universities and the important role they have in providing a high-quality and accessible education to an increasingly diverse student population, as well as contributing to regional and state economic development.
