“Senator Hegar is a wonderful example of what one can accomplish with hard work and the empowerment of a good education,” UHV President Tim Hudson said. “His words will help inspire our new graduates to use the knowledge they have acquired to make a positive difference in their families and communities.”
Hegar, the youngest member of the Texas Senate, is a sixth generation Texan who farms on land that has been in his family since the mid-1800s. He represents District 18, which includes Victoria, Katy and 19 counties, most of which are served by UHV.
Hegar serves as vice chairman of the influential Committee on Government Organization and as a member of the powerful Committee on Natural Resources, the Committee on Nominations and the Committee on Criminal Justice. In January, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst appointed Hegar as vice chairman of the Sunset Advisory Commission. Hegar’s appointment made Texas history, marking the first time a freshman member of the Texas Legislature has been appointed to a leadership position of chairman or vice chairman of the commission.
His Senate candidacy was endorsed by his predecessor and legendary State Sen. Ken Armbrister, a Democrat. Hegar, an advocate of conservative political views, strongly espouses the values of faith, family and freedom.
Prior to running for the Senate, Hegar served in the Texas House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University in 1993, and his master’s and law degrees from St. Mary’s University in 1997. He also earned a master of laws degree from the University of Arkansas in 1998.
In recognition of his service to Texas, Hegar was named one of the Best Legislators and the Rookie of the Year for the 80th Session by Capitol Inside magazine. He also has received the Legislative Excellence Award from the Texas Municipal Police Association, Star for Rural Texas from the Texas Farm Bureau and the Perfectly Pro-Life Award from Texas Right to Life.
Glenn, his wife, Dara, and their children, Claire, Julia and Jonah, live in Katy, where they attend Memorial Lutheran Church.
