Three UHV online programs ranked for affordability
National ranking website OnlineU.org recently included University of Houston-Victoria’s programs in computer information systems, creative writing and economics in three lists of affordable degree options.
The rankings are:
- No. 12 – Most Affordable Online Colleges for Creative Writing Degrees
- No. 14 – Most Affordable Online Colleges for a Master’s in Information Systems
- No. 22 – Most Affordable Online Colleges for Economics Degrees
“These rankings are a welcome acknowledgement of UHV’s effort to offer affordable, accessible education to students anywhere,” UHV President Vic Morgan said. “These are excellent programs, and it is encouraging to see them receive such praise from an outside source.”
When ranking institutions, OnlineU.org considered schools with online programs. When looking at affordability, the website used out-of-state tuition rates to calculate affordability unless a school allows all online students to pay in-state rates.
The website included the UHV School of Arts & Sciences’ Bachelor of Arts in creative writing and Master of Fine Arts in creative writing degrees in its ranking. The school’s Master of Science in computer information systems also was ranked. Students who earn this degree can work in many possible careers as an information technology manager, system or database administrator, system analyst or data analyst. Students also can pursue concentrations that will allow them to work in digital gaming design, cloud computing and big data analysis.
For the economics list, the UHV School of Business Administration’s five graduate economics options were included: Master of Science in economic development and entrepreneurship, Global MBA in economic development, Strategic MBA in economic development, Fourth-Year Global Bridge MBA in economic development and Fourth-Year Strategic Bridge MBA in economic development.
The graduate computer information systems program, as well as many other online UHV programs, serve online students in Texas, the nation and even outside the U.S., said Yun Wan, a UHV professor of computer information systems and director of the graduate computer information systems program. The university works to make sure the programs are affordable for people in all economic levels.
In order to ensure online students receive the best education possible, UHV’s faculty members use tools such as online discussion, blogging and wiki, online testing and video embedding, Wan said. The faculty also receive special training to learn how to best reach online students.
“Our program has been serving students for 13 years, and we have built a reputation in the online teaching community,” Wan said. “This ranking is proof of the popularity of our program, and it indicates the visibility our program has achieved.”
The University of Houston-Victoria, located in the heart of the Coastal Bend region since 1973 in Victoria, Texas, offers courses leading to more than 80 academic programs in the schools of Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; and Education, Health Professions & Human Development.
