UHV to host clinic to prepare students for strength, conditioning exam
The University of Houston-Victoria is making the path to becoming a strength and conditioning coach easier by presenting a test preparation clinic.
For the first time, UHV will host a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist exam preparation live clinic. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 23 and 24 in the Alcorn Auditorium of UHV University West, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St.
The clinic is for students studying to become a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. The clinic also is open to area residents who want to boost their credentials in athletic training.
“Most college and professional sports strength coaches have CSCS certification,” said Raymond Tucker, a UHV assistant professor of kinesiology. “It’s the gold standard for sports performance training.”
The exam is another step forward in UHV’s evolving kinesiology program. UHV began offering a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology in fall 2015. There now are four concentrations within the program: exercise sports science, pre-allied health, physical education and sports management. Students also can minor in exercise sports science, physical education, sports management or strength and conditioning.
A college degree is required to obtain the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification, but UHV juniors and seniors are welcome to attend the clinic so they can be certified as soon as they graduate, Tucker said.
“The exam is difficult since it’s the leading standard in the industry, but it can be manageable with preparation,” he said. “Students who are interested in a career in training athletes should attend the clinic to get a feel for what the exam is about and the key concepts they need to master.”
With a blend of classroom lecture and hands-on training, the clinic provides an overview of content and concepts emphasized on the exam. National Strength and Conditioning Association staff members teach it. Students will have a chance to ask questions to experts in the field, Tucker said.
