Lights, Camera, JAXNATION selected as UHV’s 2018 Homecoming theme
A glamorous scene is in store for attendees of the 2018 University of Houston-Victoria Homecoming.
Lights, Camera, JAXNATION is this year’s Homecoming theme. Hollywood and its stars will be incorporated into some of the events planned for Homecoming week Feb. 26 to March 3.
“This year’s theme has a lot of creative options we can run with during the week’s events,” said Hilary Kofron, UHV Student Life & Services associate director and co-chair of the 2018 Homecoming Committee. “The theme will be fun with lots of energy to capture everyone’s attention and keep them engaged throughout the week.”
After an 18-year absence, UHV re-instituted homecoming in 2016 as a way to unite employees, students, community members and alumni.
“Homecoming is significantly valued by the student body and alumni, and it brings an energetic, spirited atmosphere to campus,” UHV President Vic Morgan said. “It also is a great opportunity to bring students, faculty, staff, alumni and the Victoria community together in a positive way to celebrate UHV’s past, present and future.”
UHV students, faculty and staff were able to vote on this year’s theme. Lights, Camera, JAXNATION got the most votes out of five choices. Kofron said she thought the connection to Hollywood’s glitz and glamour, and the flexibility in creating activities around it was the main reason the theme won.
The week will begin Feb. 26 with a kickoff concert and will continue with activities every day leading up to a dance on March 3. Another event scheduled is a Walk of Fame information station that will incorporate the famous Hollywood Boulevard attraction, as well as the annual 1973 breakfast event with entertainment beforehand.
Some of the other returning events for Homecoming will include an alumni banquet with a guest magician and comedian show, president’s tailgate and retired faculty and staff lunch.
Kira Mudd, UHV director of alumni relations and annual giving, said last year’s alumni banquet had a tremendous turnout with 178 attendees. The event provided a fun and festive platform for recognizing selected distinguished alumni.
This year’s new Homecoming events will include a Jog for jaX 5K, which will benefit the Texas Zoo where UHV’s live jaguar mascot jaX is located; a powderpuff football game; and a partnership with the Riverside Food Truck Festival.
Alvaro De La Cruz, UHV’s 2017-2018 Student Government Association president and co-chair of the 2018 Homecoming Committee, said he’s most excited about the jam-packed activities happening on Saturday, including the crowning of this year’s Homecoming king and queen to be announced between Jaguars baseball games, dance and the food truck festival. De La Cruz expects the March 3 festival to encourage more community members to go to the doubleheader against Huston-Tillotson.
“This year, we really wanted UHV faculty and staff to connect with the students and celebrate Homecoming week together.” De La Cruz said. “We also want the community to get involved, and bringing in activities that appeal to the public will help us do that.”
