UHV and VC to Host 11th Annual Math and Computer Science Awareness Day

The University of Houston-Victoria and The Victoria College are teaming up to host an afternoon of celebration that will include math and computer science contests for local high school students in observance of National Mathematics Awareness Month. The 11th annual Math and Computer Science Awareness Day event will be held Wednesday, April 5, from 3 to 6:30 p.m. in the UHV Multi-Purpose Room.

Each high school can enter up to two four-member teams in each subject. Each math team will include one student from each grade level (9-12), while each computer science team will consist of two students each from grades 11 and 12. Other events scheduled for the afternoon include hands-on applications, demonstrations, and video and lecture presentations. Participants will also enjoy pizza and soft drinks, complements of local restaurants and beverage companies.

Students will have 30 minutes to complete the math and computer science tests, each of which will comprise 25 multiple choice questions/problems. UHV and VC will award scholarships to the top two overall contest winners in each subject, in addition to trophies to the first, second and third place teams. Team scores will be determined using the top three individual scores from each team. Ties will be broken using percent accuracy.

The American Mathematical Society, the American Statistical Association, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics have announced that the theme for Mathematics Awareness Month 2006 is “Mathematics and Internet Security,” with particular focus on the role of mathematics in fighting identity theft and computer viruses, as well as its role in ensuring accuracy, fairness and security of Internet voting systems.
