VC/UHV Library to offer workshop about grant proposals
The Victoria College/University of Houston-Victoria Library will host an Aug. 3 workshop to help area organizations learn how to write effective grant proposals and find funding.
“The grant application process can be intimidating for those trying to find funding for their organizations,” said Jaena Manson, instruction and outreach librarian for the VC/UHV Library. “Through this workshop, we want to demystify the process and empower organizations.”
Grants 101: Finding Funders & Writing Successful Grants will be from 9 a.m. to noon in Room 205 of the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. The cost to attend is $25, and Kristal Johnson will be the presenter.
Johnson, an international speaker, corporate trainer and author, has coached thousands of individuals across North America, Europe and Africa to collectively raise $200 million from funders and individual donors during the past decade. Johnson also is a long-standing member of the Grant Professionals Association and Nonprofit Technology Network, and serves as a grant reviewer for federal agencies and the United Way of Greater Houston.
Many aspects of the grant-writing process will be covered, including writing winning proposals; identifying prospective funders, donors and volunteers; and using free grant-writing tools and resources. Attendees also will be taught how to use social networks in their funding research.
“Many clients ask me how to differentiate themselves from the crowd,” Johnson said. “I review grants often, so there are always questions about how to write a compelling, winning proposal, but this workshop will cover much more.”
There are methods to finding funders that many people don’t know about, and that’s what will be covered in the three-hour workshop, Johnson said. Incorporating an organization’s nonprofit story is extremely important to include in a grant proposal. In addition, there are other ways that are free and easy to look for funders.
