UHV named best college in Katy fourth year in row

KATY – Thanks to support from Katy Times readers, the University of Houston-Victoria has been voted the Best College in Katy for the fourth year in a row.

“Receiving this repeated show of support and recognition of our university is so encouraging and humbling,” UHV President Bob Glenn said. “We are grateful for the continued support from the Katy community, and we look forward to providing quality higher education for many years to come.”

More than 72,000 Katy Times readers took part in the Best of Katy voting process. Readers filled in online ballots that were tallied for the 2019 All the Best special section, which was published Thursday, said Delal Hamid, Katy Times multi-media sales specialist.

UHV Katy opened in August 2016 at its current location at 2002 W. Grand Parkway N., Building 2. The university offers many degree programs and concentrations for transfer and graduate students at UHV Katy in addition to undergraduate and graduate degrees at its main residential campus in Victoria and online. UHV will move to the new instructional site in time for fall classes. The new location at 22400 Grand Circle Blvd. will house both UHV and UH degree programs.

“This award speaks to the excellent quality of the programs offered at UHV Katy as well as the value we place on community involvement,” said Karla DeCuir, senior director of enrollment management and external affairs at UHV Katy. “The Katy community has been welcoming and excited to partner with us to promote higher education. We are appreciative of their support of UHV Katy.”

To help promote higher education in Katy and the Greater Houston area, UHV has partnered with higher education institutions, including Houston Community College, which has worked with UHV to develop a Start in Katy, Finish in Katy program. The university also has a memorandum of understanding with Lone Star College. In addition, the university has partnered with the Katy Economic Development Council, Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, Katy Independent School District, West Houston Association and Katy Rotary.

UHV students also have the opportunity to be involved in the community through research projects. In previous years, projects have included collecting and analyzing data for the Fort Bend County Libraries and helping the National Association of Steel Pipe Distributors, a business-focused nonprofit, create a social media plan. Earlier this year, students in a UHV marketing course helped create a social media plan for the UHV Small Business Development Center.

For Megan Burlingame, a Katy resident and UHV student, taking classes at UHV Katy has been a positive experience. She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in management in 2018 from UHV after taking classes at UHV Katy and online, and now she is working toward earning a Global MBA in marketing from UHV.

Megan Burlingame

“I was impressed with UHV Katy before I even started attending classes because of the helpful attitude of my academic advisor,” Burlingame said. “From day one, I knew I was more than just a number because everyone I spoke with cared and wanted to help me succeed. Any time I had a question, I could reach out and either get an answer or be directed to the person who could help me find the answer.”

The close proximity to home and option to take online classes were helpful for Burlingame because she wanted to stay close to her family while earning her degree.

“My mom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s when I was younger,” she said. “I had the option to go away to school, but I wanted to be able to spend as much time as possible with her. Between UHV’s flexible class schedule and online courses, I was able to be with my mom and also get a job that I love.”
