UHV offers spring break events for whole community at Student Organization Day

The University of Houston-Victoria is bringing spring break fun to all its students and the entire community with Student Organization Day on March 19.

Kristen Lindley

“We’re going to offer a fun, safe environment for everyone,” UHV Student Senate President Kristen Lindley said.

The event will start at 3 p.m. with a carnival at the St. Joseph-O’Connor Athletic Complex, one block northeast of the intersection of Airline and Navarro streets.

The event will include hair painting, UHV Jaguars temporary tattoos, a javelin toss, a dunking booth, a rock wall and a live mariachi band.Attendees will receive free T-shirts and Mexican food while supplies last.

Most UHV student organizations are expected to have booths and games. These organizations include the Student Senate, Gamma Beta Phi, United Campus Ministry, Criminal Justice Society and the Mexican American Student Organization. The Dorothy O’Connor Pet Adoption Center and the South Texas Blood Mobile also will be present.

In order to bring together all of UHV’s students to join in the fun, Student Services has chartered a bus to provide free transportation to Victoria for Fort Bend-area students, faculty and staff. Many of the 20 Chinese graduate students and professors taking UHV business classes in Sugar Land and Katy this semester will be among those attending the events.

“Everyone is welcome to come, but seats are limited,” said Janet Foerster, the UHV staff member coordinating the event. “If anyone wants to enjoy free transportation, they just need to e-mail me to reserve a seat.”

The bus will leave from the University of Houston System at Cinco Ranch at noon, stop off at the UHS at Sugar Land campus, and then head to Victoria in time for the carnival. It will stay at the complex to allow students to watch the Jaguars softball game against Dana College of Nebraska at 5 p.m. at Burge Field, part of the O’Connor complex.

At 7 p.m., the bus will take the Fort Bend travelers to Riverside Stadium to enjoy the Jaguars baseball game against Fisher College of Boston. After the game, the bus will return students to the two Houston-area campuses.

The entire event is free for UHV students, faculty and staff with proper student or employee ID. Community members are admitted free into the carnival but will be charged standard admission for the sporting events. General admission to each game is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Students 11 and younger get in free with a paid adult.
